Half an hour drive, north of Preveza, stands the homeric Necromanteion of Acheron. This famous Sanctuary of the underworld, provided oracles to pilgrims from their loved ones, who had passed away. Nearby lies the ruins of “Ephyra”, a 14th century ΒC Mycenaean colony. The archaeological site is surrounded by cyclopean walls, on the top of a small hill, facing at Ammoudia bay.

Nearby flows the river Acheron, who acquires metaphysical significance -since according to tradition- the god Hermes “Psychopompos”, was carrying the souls to Hades, through Acheron river. The name of Acheron originates from the word “Achos” meaning sadness, referring to the grief of death. On its course to Ionian sea, is intersected with the tributaries rivers Kokytos and Pyriflegethonta, the names of which refers to the lament of death and the symbolism of fiery Hell.
